mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; color: #1a1a1a;\">Dongshigu Village, Shandong Province.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>In late April 2012, blind activist Chen Guangcheng dazzled the world by scaling the back wall of his compound and eluding the frustrated grasp of the Chinese Communist security machine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>As though to punish him on the anniversary of his escape, Chen\u2019s relatives in Dongshigu Village are being seriously harassed and subjected to death threats. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; color: #1a1a1a;\">Chen Guangcheng spent years in jail, then under severe house arrest, after he exposed the widespread, systematic use of forced abortion and involuntary sterilization in Linyi City, Shandong Province, in 2005.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; color: #1a1a1a;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; color: #1a1a1a;\">According to reports by Yaxue Cao of \u201cSeeing Red in China\u201d and by Chinese Human Rights Defenders, harassment of Chen\u2019s relatives has intensified greatly in the past several weeks.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Chen\u2019s older brother, Chen Guangfu, has reported that his home has been pelted with stones, breaking windows and damaging the roof.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Also, dead chickens and ducks have been thrown onto his property, together with fake money that is burned for the dead.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>According to the CHRD, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi;\">\u201c[t]his is a curse and a threat used by the local villagers; it means death and conveys the idea that killing the person is as easy as killing a chicken or a duck.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Flyers have been posted around Dongshigu Village denouncing Chen Guangcheng and Chen Guangfu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 24.0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi;\">Wednesday afternoon, authorities detained Chen Guangfu\u2019s wife, allegedly for \u201chiding and sheltering a criminal.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>This \u201ccriminal\u201d would be her son, Chen Kegui. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia; color: #262626;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>On April 26, 2012, after discovering that Chen Guangcheng was missing, authorities burst into the home of Chen Guangfu, dragged him away, and beat his wife and son, Chen Kegui.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Fearing for his life, Kegui grabbed a kitchen knife to defend himself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>According to Congressional testimony of Chen Guangcheng, these officials did not sustain any major injuries.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Nevertheless, Kegui was charged with attempted murder.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>He was later convicted of \u201cintentional injury\u201d and sentenced to three years and three months in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 24.0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia; color: #262626;\">Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women\u2019s rights Without Frontiers, stated, \u201cWe condemn the persecution of the relatives of Chen Guangcheng by Chinese Communist thugs.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>This harassment is clearly designed to silence him as one of the leading voices in the world to expose the brutality of this regime.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The Chinese government will even stoop to detain without food or water a 10-year-old child in an attempt to silence her activist father, as in the case of Zhang Anni, earlier this month.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>We urge Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop the harassment of Chen Guangcheng\u2019s relatives in Dongshigu Village.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>We call upon President Obama and Secretary Kerry to urgently intervene on behalf of Chen Guangcheng\u2019s relatives in China.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 24.0pt;
