{"id":1868,"date":"2014-11-13T03:57:13","date_gmt":"2014-11-13T03:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=1868"},"modified":"2019-03-28T02:42:14","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T02:42:14","slug":"u-k-push-to-ban-sex-selective-abortions-hailed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/u-k-push-to-ban-sex-selective-abortions-hailed\/","title":{"rendered":"U.K. Push to Ban Sex-Selective Abortions Hailed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s a woman&#8217;s right to give birth to her daughter,&#8221; says Reggie Littlejohn, of Women&#8217;s Rights Without Frontiers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">By Adelaide Mena\/CNA\/EWTN News<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">(National Catholic Register) WASHINGTON \u2014 The British Parliament\u2019s move to ban sex-selective abortion is a move to defend women\u2019s rights \u2014 including the right to be born \u2014 say supporters of the legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSex-selective abortion is violent discrimination against females,\u201d Reggie Littlejohn, president of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #c1272d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/\">Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers<\/a>, told CNA Nov. 5.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe message of sex-selection abortion is that girls do not deserve to live,\u201d she stressed. It is impossible to support women\u2019s rights without supporting the right of females to be born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">On Nov. 4, members of the House of Commons of the British Parliament voted 181-1 to clearly declare sex-selective abortions illegal. Though the bill is not yet an act, and may not receive enough parliamentary time before upcoming elections in the United Kingdom, supporters of the legislation hope it will send a message on the unacceptability of sex-selective abortion under current law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The bill was introduced surrounding confusion over existing laws surrounding sex-selective abortion following former Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s 2013 decision to not bring charges against two doctors caught agreeing to the abortion of baby girls solely on the basis of their sex during an undercover investigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Scotland Yard investigated the incident, passing it on to the Crown Prosecution Service, who said that though enough evidence existed to prosecute the case, it was not in the \u201cpublic interest\u201d to bring the charges against the doctors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Later, Sir Keir added to the confusion, saying that existing laws do \u201cnot, in terms, expressly prohibit gender-specific abortions,\u201d and arguing that doctors have \u201cwide discretion\u201d in assessing the continuation of a pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Prime Minister David Cameron and other ministers have continued to assert that abortions based on the grounds of an unborn child\u2019s sex are illegal. However, the British Medical Association has said that there could be situations where it \u201cwould be lawful\u201d to abort a pregnancy because of the sex of a child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The motion was brought forth by Fiona Bruce, a minister in the British Parliament, calling for a \u201cclarification is needed\u201d on the law in an Oct. 29 blog post explaining her position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">She said that the bill is needed not \u201csimply to ensure that a clear message goes out about the morality of the practice, but also to ensure that government has an opportunity to work out a way to offer help to women who are under pressure to have sex-selective abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhatever you think about abortion, most agree that the sex of the baby does not justify a termination,\u201d she urged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Bruce has spoken publicly about the abuse faced by many women facing sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Littlejohn, whose organization draws attention to dangers of China\u2019s one-child policy, as well as the practices of sex-selective abortion in China, India and elsewhere, corroborated this aspect of the motion, noting that many women seeking the abortion of girls \u201care being forced to do so against their will because of strong, cultural son preference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">She said, \u201cIt is a woman\u2019s right to give birth to her daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Read original article at National Catholic Register:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #003399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/u.k.-push-to-ban-sex-selective-abortions-hailed#ixzz3Imbhg9tw\">http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/u.k.-push-to-ban-sex-selective-abortions-hailed#ixzz3Imbhg9tw<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a woman&#8217;s right to give birth to her daughter,&#8221; says Reggie Littlejohn, of Women&#8217;s Rights Without Frontiers.
