{"id":2067,"date":"2015-10-29T23:19:33","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T23:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2019-03-28T02:52:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T02:52:59","slug":"as-chinas-one-child-policy-turns-35-woman-to-abort-at-8-months-or-husband-to-lose-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/as-chinas-one-child-policy-turns-35-woman-to-abort-at-8-months-or-husband-to-lose-job\/","title":{"rendered":"As China\u2019s One Child Policy Turns 35, Woman to Abort at 8 Months, Or Husband to Lose Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1442433302721_4547\" class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">BEIJING, CHINA.\u00a0 A woman \u201cillegally pregnant\u201d with her second child in Yunnan, China says she feels pressured to have an illegal abortion at eight months, so that her husband will not lose his job as a police officer.\u00a0 Her struggle has given rise to an outcry against the One Child Policy in China, which will turn 35 on September 25<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1442433302721_4579\" class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">According to reports, the 41-year-old woman, who will only identify herself as by her surname, Chen, stated, \u201cI am fearful.\u00a0 If my husband believes I must abort the child, there\u2019s nothing I can do . . .\u00a0 I am worried he would lose his job even after we lose the baby, if the situation gets messy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1442433302721_4583\" class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Wen Xueping, a Yunnan Family Planning Official, stated, \u201cNo way will we force them to have an abortion.\u201d\u00a0 He did, however, warn of the consequences of having a child without permission.\u00a0 These consequences can include heavy fines and job loss for government employees, such as Chen\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1442433302721_4587\" class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers, stated, \u201cThe statement of the Family Planning Official is typical Chinese communist double-speak.\u00a0 On one hand, he says that they will not force Chen to have an abortion.\u00a0 On the other hand, the hefty fines he warns of can be ten times a person\u2019s annual salary.\u00a0 If a couple cannot afford to pay this \u2018terror fine,\u2019 then they have no choice but an abortion.\u00a0 This constitutes a forced abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">On June 12, 2012, Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers broke to the West news of the forced abortion of Feng Jianmei, posting a heartbreaking photo of Feng with her daughter, forcibly aborted at seven months.\u00a0 [Warning, graphic image.]\u00a0\u00a0 The brutality of this violence unleashed a firestorm of criticism against forced abortion under China\u2019s One Child Policy.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #196ad4;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=667<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Littlejohn continued, \u201cThe fact that \u00a0Chen is now being forced to choose between abortion at 8 months and the loss of her husband\u2019s job demonstrates that forced abortion continues to this day under China\u2019s One Child Policy.\u00a0 Headlines have stated that the Policy has been \u2018relaxed,\u2019 allowing some couples to have a second child.\u00a0 But in the urban areas, if both members of a couple have siblings, these couples still can have only one child.\u00a0 If they get pregnant without a Birth Permit, they may still be subject to forced abortion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1442433302721_4598\" class=\"yiv3348133499MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe anguish of \u00a0Chen dramatically demonstrates that China\u2019s forced abortion policy needs to be abolished now.\u00a0 Forced abortion is official government rape.\u00a0 The One Child Policy \u2013 having \u2018prevented\u2019 400 million births, too often by forced abortion &#8212;
