It&#8217;s a Woman&#8217;s Right to Give Birth to her Daughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2184\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Girl-with-Pink-Hat-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2184\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2184\" src=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Girl-with-Pink-Hat-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cEu-Meh,\u201d saved from sex-selective abortion by WRWF\u2019s \u201cSave a Girl\u201d Campaign\" width=\"219\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cEu-Meh,\u201d saved from sex-selective abortion by WRWF\u2019s \u201cSave a Girl\u201d Campaign<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>This Mother&#8217;s Day, let us remember the mothers in China who are not as fortunate as we, who are indeed suffering greatly because of the forced abortion of illegal pregnancies, and also the intense pressure to abort or abandon baby girls, especially second daughters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The United States Congress recently held a hearing on PRENDA, the Pre-Natal Non-Discrimination Act, designed to protect girls from sex-selective abortion in the United States.\u00a0 Reggie Littlejohn submitted the following Statement to be included in the Congressional Record:<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1462469327639_26381\" class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">According to a U.N. expert, up to 200 million women are missing in the world today due to gendercide, sex-selective abortion.\u00a0 \u00a0This number is greater than all the casualties of all the wars of the twentieth century combined.\u00a0 This is the true \u201cwar on women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1462469327639_26405\" class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Sex-selective abortion is the ultimate violence against females.\u00a0 Aborting a baby just because she is a girl is the ultimate act of gender discrimination.\u00a0 It says that females are so worthless we don\u2019t deserve to be born, to draw breath on this earth.\u00a0 Can we credibly say that we stand for women\u2019s rights without standing against the sex-selective abortion of future women?<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1462469327639_26407\" class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Sex-selective abortion is strongly related to forced abortion.\u00a0 Some say sex-selective abortion is protected by a woman\u2019s right to choose to terminate a pregnancy for any reason.\u00a0 This view ignores the crushing social, economic, political and personal pressures that trample women carrying girls in cultures with a strong son preference.\u00a0 All too often, women in these cultures do not choose to abort their daughters.\u00a0 They are forced.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1462469327639_26409\" class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">A woman need not be dragged out of her home and strapped down to a table to be a victim of forced abortion.\u00a0 Persistent emotional pressure, estrangement from the extended family, threat of abandonment or divorce, verbal abuse, and domestic violence often overpower women who otherwise would otherwise choose to keep their daughters.\u00a0 And when people from cultures of violent son preference move to another country, such as the United States, these same pressures follow them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, a 2011 study by Dr. Sunita Puri of the University of California at San Francisco found that 89 percent of immigrant Indian women interviewed in California, New Jersey and New York, who became pregnant with girls during the study period, had abortions.\u00a0 None who were pregnant with boys aborted them.\u00a0 The participants identified pressure from their husbands and mothers-in-law as &#8220;sources of significant pressure&#8221; for the sex-selective abortion. \u00a0<i>See,<\/i>\u00a0\u201cPressure to Bear Sons Leads Some Indian Immigrant Women to Sex Selection, Abortion, Study Finds.\u201d\u00a0<a style=\"color: #196ad4;\" href=\"http:\/\/coe.ucsf.edu\/coe\/news\/sex_selection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/coe.ucsf.edu\/coe\/news\/sex_selection.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Systematic, sex-selective abortion constitutes gendercide.\u00a0 Because of this gendercide, there are an estimated 37 million more men than women in China today.\u00a0 The presence of these \u201cexcess males\u201d is the driving force behind human trafficking and sexual slavery, not only within China but from surrounding nations as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">It is a woman\u2019s right to choose to give birth to her daughters.\u00a0\u00a0 Together, China and India comprise one third of the world\u2019s population.\u00a0 That one-third of the world\u2019s women live in a culture that pressures them to selectively abort girls is the biggest women\u2019s rights abuse on earth.\u00a0 It deserves a passionate response from groups that stand for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9176684738MsoNormal\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Our\u00a0<a style=\"color: #196ad4;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/index.php?nav=end-gendercide-and-forced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cSave a Girl\u201d Campaign<\/a>\u00a0is saving the lives of baby girls in China.\u00a0 We reach out to women who are contemplating abortion of their baby girls, who are being pressured to abandon their baby girls after birth, or who are so desperately poor that their baby girls are at risk. \u00a0\u00a0We encourage these women to keep their baby girls and offer them support for a year to help them care for their daughters.
