{"id":2947,"date":"2020-06-24T00:52:05","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T00:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=2947"},"modified":"2020-06-24T00:52:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T00:52:05","slug":"international-widows-day-china-tries-to-force-widow-to-renounce-her-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/international-widows-day-china-tries-to-force-widow-to-renounce-her-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS DAY \u2013 CHINA TRIES TO FORCE WIDOW TO RENOUNCE HER FAITH"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"377\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Widow-weeping.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2948\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Widow-weeping.png 377w, https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Widow-weeping-203x300.png 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>One of many widows helped <\/strong><strong>by our &#8220;Save a Widow&#8221; campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Catholic widow in Fuzhou city, Jiangxi province, has had her pension revoked because she refused to renounce her faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto a report in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/believers-forced-to-choose-between-faith-or-survival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bitter Winter<\/a>, <\/em>the\nelderly woman had been receiving a small subsidy since her husband died in\n2018.&nbsp; At the end of 2019, local officials threatened that her subsidy\nwould be stopped unless she would remove images of Jesus from her home.&nbsp;\n\u201cBecause the Communist Party feeds you, you must only believe in it, not God,\u201d\nthey told her.&nbsp; When she refused to remove the images of Jesus, they\ncanceled her subsidy.&nbsp; \u201cIt has become difficult to maintain belief in God\nbecause of religious persecution,\u201d she told <em>Bitter\nWinter<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reggie\nLittlejohn, founder and president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers<\/a>, stated, \u201cIt is\na heartbreak and an outrage that widows and other elderly are forced to\nrenounce their faith in order to receive stipends.&nbsp; For many, they may\nneed these funds to survive.&nbsp; <strong>It a\npathetic act of cowardice to force desperate widows to choose between their\nsurvival and their God.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/strong>This widow, who refused to renounce her\nfaith potentially in the face of abject poverty, is heroic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis form\nof religious persecution,\u201d Littlejohn continued, \u201cis on the rise in the area of\nChina where we have our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/index.php?nav=help-chinese-widows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Save a Widow Campaign<\/a>.&nbsp;\nI was just informed that in our area, a government official has instructed our\nwidows to stay home on Sundays and not to go to church.&nbsp; He also ridiculed\nJesus, saying, \u2018The Chinese government gives you 160 RMB (about $23).&nbsp; How\nmuch money does Jesus Christ give you?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFortunately\nfor the widows in our area, they have a ready answer,\u201d Littlejohn added.&nbsp;\n\u201cOur fieldworkers bring love and compassion to widows, along with practical\nhelp: a $25 monthly stipend that makes a huge difference in their lives,\nproviding food and warmth.&nbsp; Our fieldworkers encourage these widows in\ntheir faith, and many have found new hope that there is a God who loves them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China also\nhas a skyrocketing rate of senior suicide. The One Child Policy has destroyed\nthe family structure in China. In the past, the Chinese enjoyed large families\nand it was not a burden for children and grandchildren to support the elderly.\nNow many elderly are completely abandoned and destitute, especially elderly\nwidows.
