{"id":3168,"date":"2021-02-18T19:14:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T19:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=3168"},"modified":"2021-02-18T19:14:29","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T19:14:29","slug":"thanks-to-your-help-xingjuan-was-saved-from-being-given-away-to-strangers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/thanks-to-your-help-xingjuan-was-saved-from-being-given-away-to-strangers\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanks to your help, \u201cXingjuan\u201d was saved from being given away to strangers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"352\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Xingjuan.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Xingjuan.jpg 352w, https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Xingjuan-300x280.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Xingjuan was eleven months old when we found her.\u00a0 She is a rare third daughter in her family.\u00a0 Rare, because even second daughters are at risk of being aborted or abandoned under China\u2019s Two Child Policy.\u00a0 Few third daughters are allowed to see the light of day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Life is extremely hard for Xingjuan and her family.\u00a0 Her parents are vegetable farmers.\u00a0 During the Covid-19 economic shutdown in China, no trucks came to their remote village to buy vegetables.\u00a0 Much of their crop simply rotted in the greenhouse.\u00a0 Not only did they make no money, but they spent money, time and energy maintaining their farm.\u00a0 Now, they are financially devastated.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another factor that makes life hard for this family is \u201cdaughter shaming.\u201d\u00a0 They are known in their village as \u201cthe family with daughters only.\u201d \u00a0Xingjuan\u2019s paternal grandmother feels particularly shamed by this, because her son (Xingjuan\u2019s father) is the only boy\u00a0<em>she<\/em>\u00a0had, and now she has no\u00a0<em>grandsons,<\/em>\u00a0either.\u00a0 This grandmother found a family in a nearby village that has two sons, and tried to pressure Xingjuan\u2019s mom into giving Xingjuan away to that family. \u00a0Because there are so many more men living in China than women, some parents resort to \u201cadopting\u201d a baby girl, to raise her as the future wife of their son. \u00a0Xingjuan\u2019s mom fought against giving away her daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately for Xingjuan and her family, our fieldworker heard about their plight and approached them with an offer of encouragement and financial support for one year.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Our support turned the whole situation around: now Xingjuan is viewed as a lucky girl by her family, and even the grandmother has changed her mind.\u00a0 The grandmother said that for years she prayed to God for a grandson, but now she sees that granddaughters can be a big blessing from God, too.\u00a0 She admits she has never thought of granddaughters this way before!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Xingjuan was eleven months old when we found her.\u00a0 She is a rare third daughter in her family.\u00a0 Rare, because even second daughters are at risk of being aborted or abandoned under China\u2019s Two Child Policy.\u00a0 Few third daughters are &hellip;
