{"id":444,"date":"2011-10-28T22:30:52","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T22:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=444"},"modified":"2019-03-28T01:10:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T01:10:50","slug":"relativity-media-ignores-chen-guangcheng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/relativity-media-ignores-chen-guangcheng\/","title":{"rendered":"Relativity Media Ignores Chen Guangcheng"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A reliable source inside China has informed Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers that film mogul Relativity Media is shooting <em>\u201c21 and Over\u201d<\/em> in Linyi, China &#8212; the very city where blind activist Chen Guangcheng is languishing near death for exposing the fact that Linyi had 130,000 forced abortions and sterilizations in 2005.\u00a0 Film production commenced October 26.<\/p>\n<p>According to Relativity Media\u2019s press release, <em>21 and Over<\/em> is a \u201chilarious comedy . . . about two childhood friends who drag their straight-arrow buddy out to celebrate his twenty-first birthday the night before an all-important medical school interview. But when one beer leads to another, the evening spirals into a wild epic misadventure of debauchery and mayhem that none of them will ever forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers, stated, \u201cOut of the thousands of locations in China, why was Linyi targeted?\u00a0\u00a0 Is this a deliberate slap in the face to Chen Guangcheng and human rights in China?\u00a0\u00a0 In my opinion, it is unconscioable for Relativity Media to make this film in Linyi.\u00a0 While Relativity Media is creating a \u201cwild epic misadventure,\u201d about beer-drinking and debauchery, Chen Guangcheng is suffering unspeakable torment \u2013 beaten, tortured, denied medical treatment and being slowly starved to death \u2013 right under their noses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Littlejohn issued a call to action.\u00a0 \u201cRelativity Media has a choice.\u00a0 If they have any commitment to corporate responsibility or social justice, they will immediately cease production in Linyi because of Chen Guangcheng.\u00a0 If they ignore this plea, then I call on the people of China and the world to boycott <em>21 and Over<\/em> and deliver a crushing commercial defeat. \u00a0Let\u2019s send a message that filmgoers of conscience will not support a movie that is made in flagrant disregard of one of the world\u2019s greatest human rights heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s Rights Without Frontiers and China Aid are spearheading an international campaign to free Chen.\u00a0 Watch a three-minute video about Chen here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=296\">http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/blog\/?p=296<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sign a petition to free Chen here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"..\/..\/index.php?nav=chen-guangcheng\">http:\/\/www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org\/index.php?nav=chen-guangcheng<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Relativity Media\u2019s Sky Land partnership backing this film includes SAIF Partners and IDG China Media, part of International Data Group of Boston, in alliance with Huaxia Film Distribution Company, an official agency of the Chinese Communist Party.
